Telluride to Host National Synchro Ski Championships in 2017
Three Day Event to Bring Best Synchro Ski Teams to Compete for National Title
TELLURIDE, Colorado (November 10, 2016) – Today, Telluride Ski & Golf Resort announced that it will be hosting the National Ski Championships in February 2017. This invitation-only event will take place over three days in early February, and gives some of the best synchro skiers in the country an opportunity to compete for a national championship.
“Synchro skiing is rich in history and is seeing a resurgence, becoming more competitive and drawing attention to the sport,” said Noah Sheedy, a ski industry executive based in Telluride. “Hosting the National Championships here in Telluride will continue to spotlight this and its competitors, who train tirelessly to rise to the top of the sport.”
The three day event will consist of three parts. The synchro skiing portion of the competition will consist of six or eight person teams doing routines through multiple runs. There will be basic components each team must complete, and competitors will be judged on synchronicity of the team, individual technical skiing, overall appeal, and degree of difficulty. The team as a whole will receive a score, and individual performances are evaluated as well. The second portion will consist of head to head Giant Slalom racing, based on speed and performance, and the third portion is an individual mogul competition.
“Seeing teams compete at the highest level in this competition is truly impressive to watch – each individual has difficult counts and maneuvers to learn and all teammates must put the perfect run together to win,” said Mark MacDonald, 3-time Australian National Demo Team Member. “Add in the individual events of Giant Slalom and Mogul Skiing, and this event truly highlights some of the most technical skiers in the world.”
Taking part in the National Synchro Ski Championships will be the Telluride Ghostriders, who beat out teams from Canada, Argentina, Germany and the United States to win the 2016 World Synchro Ski Championships in April. Being ambassadors for the Telluride Ski Resort, the Ghostriders will be one of the favorites going into the event, but will face stiff competition from teams across the country.
“The Ghostriders are excited to participate in the National Synchro Ski Championships on our home mountain,” said Georgie Chapman. “We’re so passionate about the sport of synchro skiing, and it’s an honor to compete against the nation’s best teams here before we go back to the World Championships.”
