See What's In Store in the Box Canyon

Throughout the winter, skiing and snowboarding are king when it comes to adventure within and throughout the box canyon and Telluride area. While Telluride is opening for the season next Friday, December 2nd and the Thanksgiving Snow Jam will provide endless fun in Mountain Village this upcoming weekend there’s often times when you want to try something new. See what activities are in store as the resort prepares for opening day and throughout the remainder of the winter:  

Fat-tire Biking to Telluride Brewing Company

Telluride Brewing Company and Telluride Distilling Company have conveniently opened up shop just a block from each other in Lawson Hill just outside of the historic town of Telluride. A short drive or comfortable jog along the Valley Floor, Lawson Hill resides a mere 4 miles from Telluride. When the flakes start falling, there’s no better way to visit these excellent destinations than to jump on a fat-tire bike and ride along the beautifully preserved Valley Floor to the Lawson Hill area. Rent a bike from a distributor in town or jump in a tour with Bootdoctors’ Paragon Sports location on Main Street in Telluride and get a ride back from your expedition with local brews and spirits. The location on Main also rents snowshoes Nordic skiing equipment for your enjoyment, stay tuned for an update on conditions and the ability to groom the Nordic track on the Valley Floor.

Winter Fly-Fishing

There’s no better way to escape into nature than to hit the river. Winter fly fishing in Telluride is one of the best-kept secrets in all of Colorado, you'll find excellent winter fly fishing on the Uncompahgre, San Miguel and Gunnison Rivers. Telluride Outside offers guided trips all winter with quality public water and tremendous private water alternatives. Try some winter fishing in Telluride, you'll be pleasantly surprised with stunning views and great catches. Winter is a beautiful season on our rivers.

Historic Walking Tours

There’s no doubt that Telluride is chock-full of incredible history. From the mining era to Butch Cassidy’s early days as a bandit, the town is not short of great stories and rich history. Local expert, Ashley Boling , leads private groups around town telling you all you need to know about Telluride. Catering to your interests and inspirations, Boling’s Historic Interpretive Tours are an awesome way to start your day. If you’re more of a do-it-yourself kind of group, stop by the Telluride Historical Museum, then go to and pursue a self-guided walking tour throughout historic Telluride. A great way to see all of town and learn plenty about the rich history on your own two feet, it’s a tour you won’t soon forget.

Visit the Alta Lakes Observatory

Opening this weekend for winter reservations, the Observatory at Alta Lakes is a private and most certainly unique backcountry cabin located 13 miles from Telluride, Colorado just on the backside of Prospect Basin. One of only a few homes in the United States at 11,000 feet, escape with your family or group for a night’s stay and enjoy unfettered views of the star-filled sky. Eating & Drinking

If we could list all of our favorite restaurants and bars in one spot, we would. Mountain Village features unforgettable dining options including Altezza at The Peaks , which opened this past spring and, if the views don’t take your breath away, the food will. In addition, be sure to check out local’s favorite brewpub, Tomboy Tavern for a great beer selection, house-made Chicken Pot Pie and the stacked bloody mary. Opening on December 7 th after an extensive remodel, Roma Bar and Grill (RBG), previously Honga’s, will feature delicious handcrafted food, a comfortable setting and exceptional service. Or check out other favorites like Poachers Pub , Brown Dog Pizza , Siam , …There , La Cocina , High Pie or Lawson Hill’s Aemono . When in doubt, stop into a friendly-looking bar, grab a quick beverage and ask the local bartender or patrons where they like to eat, they’ll tell you everything you want to know.

Hit the Pavement for Shopping

Telluride is known for many things and shopping definitely makes the list. With plenty of Black Friday-inspired sales to explore, be sure to check out Heritage Apparel in Mountain Village for 30% off full-priced items and a whopping additional 70% off sale styles. With a prime location in the Mountain Village core, Heritage offers a chic combination of stylish basics and designer labels. Heritage has clothing for men and women for a look that is casual, yet refined. While in town, check out Zia Sun for the kids, Telluride Outside and The Hub for Dad, and Two Skirts for Mom.

Head to the Movies

Telluride’s local movie theater, the Golden Nugget , will be closed on Thanksgiving Day but will be featuring some of the latest films including Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange.  If you’re interested in checking out the latest in ski industry films, head to the Sheridan Opera House for Warren Miller’s Here, There and Everywhere presented by Bootdoctors’ premiering Saturday, November 26th at 6 pm and again at 9 pm.  

Fun in Town Park

The indoor ice rink in Town Park will be open with several times for Open Skate throughout the weekend. For the most up-to-date schedule for the rink, be sure to take a look at the Town of Telluride website . Skates can be rented at the Telluride Nordic Center for kids at $7 and adults at $10. Pending weather of course, the Town Park sledding hill may be open with rentals available at the Nordic Center for $6.

Go for a Drive

Sometimes, it’s great to get out, hit the road, and enjoy all that the San Juan range has to offer. Take a look at some of our top drives from Telluride and pick one that suits your fancy. Whether heading to Ridgway or completing the full San Juan Skyway Loop, there are plenty of beautiful road to explore etched into rock faces or rolling along valley floors.

Take a Walk

When in doubt, go for a walk along the Valley Floor or the Telluride River Trail. Beautiful year-round, the hiking trails around Telluride make for a great outing to get your heartrate moving and see all of the beautiful scenery that Telluride has to offer. If snow has fallen, be sure to look into to snowshoe rentals through Bootdoctors & Paragon Outdoors and tours available through the Telluride Adventure Center . The Mountain Village Nordic and Snowshoe Trails are both extensive and beautiful,
