In a town where women rip and athletes like Keaton McCargo and Hilaree O’Neil have been charging for years, you can imagine that the natural progression for females in Telluride is pretty clear. K2’s Marketing Coordinator and Women’s Ski Team Manager, Alyssa Clark, brought International Women’s Ski Day to light in 2013 in an effort to give women a collaborative community in which to grow, advance, and be active. The best part? It’s working, and there’s no pink or tutu necessary if you don’t want to wear one.
“Whether ladies are taking a lesson for the first time, hiking through the backcountry or just enjoying the snow with friends, IWSD is a great opportunity to have fun on the snow,” Alyssa said in K2’s 2015 Press Release .
This year, Telluride’s local ski shop, Bootdoctors, is hosting the IWSD event on mountain and in the village. Chicks with Sticks is empowering all people celebrating IWSD with free 2015/2016 demos, tons of prizes and giveaways, and a celebration of a great winter ahead. Join the crew at 10 am at The Bootdoctors in Mountain Village for coffee, pastries, and smoothies before testing some new skis and hitting the slopes with new friends. At 3 pm, wrap up a great day at Tomboy Tavern for an après event and giveaways.
Wondering why Telluride has such an incredible community for female skiers? Kelli Gleason of BootDoctors nailed it: “The ladies of Telluride tend to be highly motivated, athletic, adrenaline seekers with a core focus on health and fitness. Combine that with the social aspects of skiing (chairlift rides, hooting and hollering down the mountain, après libations…) and you’ve got a match made in heaven.”
Gleason also emphasized that, while Telluride is nestled in the bottom left corner of Colorado, it’s one of the greatest places to find camaraderie and passion in the community. Whether visiting for the holidays or bringing the girls down for a ski weekend, Telluride provides a perfect venue to get outside, be active, and make friends that will be around for life.
And guess what? Telluride has the longest running Women’s Ski Program in the country. Celebrating 35 years of Women’s Ski & Wellness Week at Telluride, this year’s programming not only focuses on perfecting your form, style, and confidence on the slopes, but also promotes mental and physical wellness. With dates in January, February and potentially March, there’s never been a more perfect time to advance your skiing, perfect your personal wellness, and hang with women that have the same goals and ideals as you.
