Summer is quickly approaching and we are putting away our skis and dusting off our hiking boots. A vacation to Telluride is usually filled with festivals, shopping and good food but one of the most beloved past-times in the San Juan’s is hiking.
When staying at The Peaks Resort and Spa or one of the many beautiful resorts in Mountain Village, you can find great hikes that will start and end right outside the hotel lobby. Many of these hikes are on the ski area and you get to experience a whole different world that is usually seen covered in feet of snow. Some easier trails that you can mountain bike as well as hike include Meadows Trail, Big Billie’s Trail, Jurassic Trail and Russel Trail. All between 0.5 and 2.5 miles long. Hikes that go up into the ski area and that are recommended for hikers and advanced/expert mountain bikers include Short Loop Trail, Sheridan Trail, Basin Trail, See Forever Trail, Wasatch Connection and Prospect Trail. These trails vary from 1.3 to 10 miles long. One favorite hike is the Village trail; this rolling three-mile descent crosses several ski trails with great views to the west while traversing through aspen and spruce-dominated drainages. After crossing Prospect Creek Drive, this trail descends into a creek bottom, crossing the wetland on a boardwalk, then continues down and connects with the Boulevard Trail, providing access to Town Hall Plaza and Mountain Village Center. You can pick up a map of all of Mountain Village and the ski area hikes at the gondolas or Visitor Center.
When setting out on a hike, especially if you’re traveling to Telluride from sea level, mountain safety is a must. You are always hiking at your own risk and have to keep in mind the liability involved in strenuous activity above 9,500 feet. You must remember to wear many layers (mountain weather changes in extreme ways), bring plenty of food and water, sunscreen (even on cloudy days), being aware of health affects at high altitude, being prepared for lightning and thunderstorms and always abiding by trail signs and closures. Once you’re adequately prepared for hikes in the mountains, you get to experience something like none other: the high mountains open to meadows of wildflowers, babbling brooks and incredible views. A hike in the San Juan’s is something you’ll never forget, and the accessibility to these hikes from Mountain Village allows you to experience it.
As well as being able to set out on hikes from your hotel room, The Peaks Resort & Spa is the only golf-in and golf-out property in Telluride and just steps away from our free gondolas.
