Considerations: Clients do not need previous backcountry skiing experience, but they do need to possess at least intermediate to advanced skiing or snowboarding ability on the resort (ski “black diamond” runs confidently). Clients coming from sea level or lower elevations should be aware of altitude and its effects when recreating. Altitude and route finding will often make going uphill much slower than clients may anticipate. All skiiers will need to provide shoe sizes upon booking.
Trip fee INCLUDES: Route-finding, risk mitigation and instruction from professional mountain guides. Mountain Trip will provide round-trip transportation, ski pack, beacon, shovel and probe, if needed. New, lightweight Alpine Touring Boots, Skis, Skins available for an additional charge. Airbag backpack available for an additional charge.
DOES NOT INCLUDE: Transportation to Telluride, personal clothing, lunch ($20 per person, from Pandora Catering). Some of these items may be available through our office; please inquire for details. We do not have splitboard rentals.
Timing: A full day backcountry ski experience takes 6-8 hours. Half day experiences can be tailored upon request, depending on skier experience and ability. Maximum group size: 8 participants.

The rugged San Juan Mountains are a compact and steep range known for light powder, well-spaced trees, mellow meadows, big faces and hidden couloirs. But, the snow pack is tricky and it's not easy to dial in the terrain and timing. Telluride Mountain Guides spend the winter tracking which lines are in and which lines are out. This local knowledge is an invaluable resource when your days in town are limited.
INTRO TO BACKCOUNTRY
Walking in the mountains, on a velvet snowy canvas, is a freedom like no other. Join our fun, patient and skilled guides for a half or full day introduction to this life-long art. We’ll cover equipment skills, terrain selection, avalanche path identification, avalanche avoidance strategies and rescue skills. This program is led by professional instructors and is based on American Avalanche Association proficiencies and guidelines.
Just outside the backcountry access points, from Telluride Ski Resort, abide some of the best “side-country” or off-piste skiing in North America. But, the snowpack is tempestuous and dangerous. The terrain is complex and consequential. Much like a heavy surf break, it is easy to get in over your head without a local guide. TMG is an invaluable service for deciding when the window is open and when the window is closed. On the right day, riding from a snowy summit directly to Oak St. (downtown Telluride) is a mind blowing experience! Give us a call to game plan an adventure and talk current conditions.
Telluride Mountain Guides has built a truly unique sled assisted backcountry touring program. Our long days in the field developing new terrain and routes, in a remote corner of the San Juans, have inspired us to share the good times with you. These zones offer solitude, sheltered powder skiing and big lines. We use the snowmobiles to gain access to the wilderness boundary. From there it’s an honest walk in the mountains. Half to full day tours, multi-day base camps and wilderness boundary cabin trips are all options. These itineraries are best game planned over the phone or a cup of coffee in town. Feel free to call us anytime!
BIG LINES BASE CAMP
Wilderness ski touring trips are real fun! No phones, no WiFi, no cars, no helis, no pressure. Plenty of solitude and big terrain. TMG has put together several superb overnight itineraries in a remote corner of our backyard range. Spend a few nights in a stocked cabin with local food and spirits on the menu and a couple nights base camp bivy glamping (perhaps not as luxurious as it sounds). Arrive at base camp with a shooting gallery of big terrain at your front door. The guide crew has pre-run and set up everything you need and nothing you don’t. A wood stove heated tipi-tent great room and kitchen welcomes, with sleeping tent pods orbiting about like a constellation of good times. Go climb to the top of a big line. Ski it. Eat good food, party, bon fire, tell stories, star gaze, sleep, eat and repeat. We have single night, on up to five night itineraries. This allows for deeper exploration and high quality celebration (two of our favorite things). You may never want to return to civilization!
The young and rugged San Juan mountains provide a test piece and lifetime playground for ski mountaineering. Telluride Mountain Guides live and breathe this range. Our close understanding of current conditions provides you with a rare window to summit and ski.
