Mountain Village and Telluride to Celebrate 20th Anniversary of Gondola in 2016
Year-long celebration planned to spotlight unique transportation system
Telluride, Colorado (June 8, 2016) -- The most unique public transportation system of its kind in North America will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The Telluride-Mountain Village Gondola will turn 20 on December 20th, 2016 and to celebrate this transportation system, a series of events will take place throughout the year.
Since its inaugural ride on December 20, 1996, the Telluride-Mountain Village Gondola has provided nearly 2.5 million people annually with free transportation between Mountain Village and Telluride. Riders have relied on the Gondola to get to and from work and play, and visitors have taken advantage of this easy mode of transportation to shuttle back and forth between the resort village, skiing, hiking and biking trails, hotels, restaurants, festivals and more.
“The Gondola has clearly established itself as an asset to the resort and community,” said Bill Jensen, CEO of Telluride Ski & Golf. “The easy access it provides riders to the town and the resort, and the spectacular views of the surrounding peaks is something that we never take for granted. It’s as much a part of the Mountain Village-Telluride landscape as the mountains and scenery.”
Throughout the year, there will be a number of events taking place to celebrate the Gondola and its contribution to the region. The anniversary kicked off when the Gondola reopened for the summer season on May 26th with a bright red anniversary cabin on the line. This celebratory cabin, Cabin #20, will be the place for spur of the moment contests, giveaways, mini-events and more throughout the year.
Other events on the horizon include a special celebration in December, contests and promotions, and gatherings to learn more about this history of the Gondola, Mountain Village and Telluride. Riders are also encouraged to take photos of the anniversary cabin and share them using the hashtag #telluridegondola for a chance to win great prizes.
“The Gondola has played a vital role in our community over the years,” said Michael Martelon, President and CEO of the Telluride Tourism Board. “It has become an icon for the destination, and we look forward to honoring its importance and celebrating 20 years of operation in the coming year.”
