Operations Culture

Mountain and Resort Operations

Spend a season or a lifetime within the Mountain Operations division of the Telluride Ski Resort. From the 1st year Lift Operator to the 35 year veteran Ski Patroller, Mountain Operations boasts 12 departments and over 300 staff. Mountain Operations consists of Ski Patrol, Grooming, Lift Operations, Snowmaking, Lift Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance, Ticket Checking, Facility Maintenance, Terrain Parks, Guest Services, Slopeside Ski Valet, and Risk Management.  Working 24 hours/day from November – April, the Mountain Operations Team gets the mountain open every day, no matter how much snow comes our way. 

By the Numbers:

  • 2,000+ acres of open terrain managed by Ski Patrol, while throwing 4,000lbs of explosives for avalanche control and making over 300 hikes up Palmyra Peak.
  • 500 acres of terrain groomed every night by the Grooming Department all the way up to 12,750 feet high.
  • 182 snow tools used and 160 pounds of coffee consumed by Lift Operations in order to get all the lifts open on time each morning.
  • 15 snowcats, 41 snowmobiles, and 40 vehicles kept in top shape and performing well all year long by Vehicle Maintenance.
  • 15 motor rooms and 1,184 lift chairs worked on every year by Lift Maintenance in order to provide 9,536 hours of dependable lift transportation for our guests.
  • 3.3 million cubic yards of snow produced by Snowmaking, covering an average of 233 acres to ensure we always open on Thanksgiving Day.
  • 113 Mountain Tours given by Guest Service Hosts, while maintaining an ability to answer any guest question thrown their way. 
  • 128 features over 3 different parks maintained by the Terrain Park Crew, in addition to hosting 3 events throughout the winter.
  • 1.7 Million passes and tickets scanned by the Ticket Checking Department, while fixing any ticket issue that comes their way.
  • 8,243 sets of skis handled by the Slopeside Ski Valet Department, at the same time reuniting guests with any and all Lost & Found items.
  • 150 ski, snowboard and snowmobile assessment tests performed by our Risk Manager to ensure our employees are staying safe one ski day at a time.
  • Countless hours spent working while in ski boots and more than enough ski breaks to keep you happy.

Mission

To provide the safest skiing experience possible for our guests each and every day.

Work Life

Get on the mountain early in order to get ahead of the guests.  Ski.  Check all the trails for hazards, assess snow conditions, mitigate avalanche hazard.  Ski some more.  Continue to monitor the ever changing conditions on the mountain.  Hang out in areas where guests are likely to need assistance.  Ski.  Render emergency medical care when needed and safely transport guests off the mountain when they are unable to do so on their own.  Clear all the trails at the end of the day making sure that all of our guests made it safely off the mountain.  Go home exhausted and get ready to do it again the next day.

Grooming and Trails

Mission

Provide the very best groomed surface for our guests in all conditions, every ski day.

Culture

Ski!  Grooming is a nightly operation, so enjoy your day (and our product) out on the hill.  The best groomers not only work hard all night long to create a fantastic surface, but check it out during the day – even if it’s only on the way to enjoy a powder stash.  All night long you are watching the snow fall and inspecting the mountain – put that knowledge to use during your off time and enjoy the goods before heading to work!  If you want to be able to ski EVERYDAY and work during the evenings on the mountain – this may be the job for you.

Work Life

Ski to work!  The shop is on the mountain and can be accessed by skiing or automobile.  Have your lunch and water ready for a night on the slopes.  Get your gear organized and enjoy a cup of coffee while your supervisors line the crew out on the evening’s workload.  Special projects abound and there is never a shortage of work to be done on the slopes – build a snow bar, knock down some moguls, doze a pitch, always leave perfect corduroy.  There are two shifts – 3:30pm to 12am and 11:30pm to 10am, either five eight-hour shifts or four ten-hour shifts on the graveyard.  Each will provide you with plenty of time to enjoy the slopes and get some sleep. 

We run Pisten Bully snowcats that are spectacularly maintained and all grooming machines are less than 4 seasons old.  That means: comfort, heat, great stereo, easy crew communication system, and a reliable cat that will lay down the buff push snow like nobody’s business.  Winch cats, park cats, slope groomers and haul cats are used each shift.

Mission

To give our guests the safest and most efficient ride up the mountain while giving out as many free smiles and high fives as humanely possible. Prepare and maintain each lift for on-time daily operations (maze set-up, ramp work, snow removal, etc.) Perform daily operations in a way that supports a safe and healthy work environment. Assist other departments in any way possible.  Have fun and ski, I can’t say this enough….have fun and ski!

Work Life

We start each day at 7:30am with a morning meeting, good coffee, music, and always some mind blowing wisdom by your supervisors at the Lift Operations Headquarters (LHQ), located on the mountain at 10,000 ft.  You should expect to work from 7:30 to 4:15 each day.  You get a one-hour lunch/ski break each day.

Earn extra ski breaks during the day by simply being awesome at your job!  Lift Ops will be scheduled to one lift each day and 3 to 4 different lifts throughout the week.  We offer full-time (5 days/week) and a few part-time positions (minimum 3 days/week).

Snowmaking

Mission

Make snow to supplement the natural snowfall, ensuring a great season for all guests. Whether its top to bottom coverage of a trail or spot patching to cover high wear areas, we work night and day to open as much terrain as possible.

Work Life

From October – January, snowmakers work extremely hard to ensure the resort is set up for early season success. Watch as the results of your hard work quickly amount to huge piles of snow, soon to be spread out for skiers and riders to enjoy.  Be ready for late nights and cold temperatures, as you follow the nightly snow plan. Whether working the day or night shift, we are a tight knit team. Confident snowmobile drivers, safety conscious, technical minds, problem solvers, and a strong work ethic. These are just some of the attributes that make a great snowmaker. Plus, when we turn the guns off in January, you have the rest of the winter to enjoy the results of your work on a free ski pass!

Ticket Checking

To capture 100% of product scans at base area lifts while giving out as many free smiles and high fives as humanely possible.  Assist the guest with any ticket issues in a friendly and professional manner. Perform daily operations in a way that supports a safe and healthy work environment. Ensure each guest has the right pass to ride the lift.  Have fun and ski, I can’t say this enough….have fun and ski!

We start each day at 8:15am with a morning meeting, good coffee, music, and always some mind blowing wisdom by your supervisors at our locker room, located right at the base of the Village Express Lift.  You should expect to work from 8:15 to 4:15 each day.  You get a one-hour lunch/ski break each day.  Earn extra ski breaks during the day by simply being awesome at your job!  Ticket Checkers will be scheduled to two lifts each day and 6 different lifts throughout the week.  We offer full-time (5 days/week) and part-time positions (minimum 3 days/week).

Terrain Parks

Mission

Create parks for all ability levels.  Strive to offer guests a way to progress, improve, and advance between the different park levels. We plan for logical transitions from our beginner, to intermediate, and all the way up to advanced park. It is our mission to exceed your expectations every day through innovative, fun, creative, and safe features.

Work Life

From 8:00 – 5:00 everyday, park staff do anything and everything to get the parks open and in perfect shape for our guests.  Rake, groom, build, grind, paint, design, test, and of course ride the features.  Start out as Park Ranger, but quickly learn all aspects of the operation and work your way into a Rail Technician and eventually a Park Groomer/Builder. Whether day or night crew, all staff will rotate through all three parks. Passion for terrain parks, willingness to learn, and a desire to work hard and have fun is all we ask.

Slopeside Ski Valet

Mission

Create a warm and friendly atmosphere for all guests and customers to begin and end their ski day.  Through customer interactions, reliable service, and accurate financial transactions, Slopeside Staff will make sure each customer’s visit to Telluride is more enjoyable and convenient.

Work Life

Starting your day at 7:45, you will set each business unit up for the day’s success. With a steady rotation between Slopeside Lockers, Lost & Found, Ski Valet, and Outside Kiosk, staff will perform a variety of important roles throughout the day.  Staff will always be challenged to find new and creative ways to grow the business, offer new products/services, implement new processes, and create a better customer experience than the day before.

MISSION

To build a team that is second to none. To provide the best service for both internal and external customers alike. By combining new ideas and old fashioned common sense our team provides service and uptime that is equal to none.

WORK LIFE

If its carries people on wheels or tracks, we probably take care of it. Snowmobiles, ATV's, Snow cats, and pickups are the main items serviced. Our key people in the shop have many years of experience to draw from to help with training and problem solving of all types. The days are long, the responsibility is high, but the work is rewarding and the views are amazing.

To create a culture of safety amongst guests and employees who work and play at Telluride Ski and Golf. Through that culture of safety employees and guests are aware of the risks surrounding them and take action to keep themselves and others safe.  We have set standards in a way that promotes personal accountability and respect for all to enjoy our mountain environment.  It is our expectation that all patrons of our resort will behave in a manner not to disrupt the experience of the individuals around them.  Telluride Ski and Golf believes that recreation and safety go hand in hand and that a safe environment leads to an unmatched experience.
