Wagner Custom Skis, the world’s only manufacturer of 100% custom skis, started off the year with the official opening of a new 4,500-square-foot manufacturing facility in the heart of Telluride’s Mountain Village. Wagner, celebrating its 10-year anniversary this season, made the move from its previous Placerville, Colorado headquarters, a repurposed vintage gas station. The new facility is in a high-profile area in The Village and has windows so resort guests can watch the ski manufacturing process while leaving the slopes.
Wagner Custom Skis opened in 2006 and has been going full throttle since. Pete Wagner bought a pair of skis that should have been perfect for him and, after trying a different pair, found out that they were anything but. Wagner Skis was born; Pete worked to design the perfect formula for building a customizable ski that fits every individual’s needs, revolutionizing the art of ski making. Out of the little shop in Placerville, Colorado, Wagner was cranking out skis worldwide, mostly with their online presence. Having made the move to Mountain Village this year, they’re now a short walk from the ski slopes making it easier for passersby to learn about their skis and even make a game-time purchase.
“Wagner was bursting at the seams in our previous location,” said Pete Wagner, company founder and mastermind behind the brand’s Skier DNA technology that enables 100% customization. “The new Mountain Village location gives us room to expand and is in an exceptional space that will help expose the brand to even more consumers.”
“Wagner has become a part of the fabric of Telluride over the past decade,” said Bill Jensen, Partner and CEO of Telluride Ski & Golf Resort. “The manufacturing facility is a unique asset for us and adds to the mountain experience for our visitors that no one else offers. It’s sort of like ordering a European sports car and picking it up on site. You can now preorder skis and come pick them up from Wagner, meet the engineers behind the design, and take the skis out on the mountain. Wagner’s premium quality and bespoke appeal align with our character and culture here in Telluride. We’re deep into planning our long-term goals for on-mountain improvements and the entire skier experience at the base. Pete and his crew are an important part of the direction we’re taking the resort as we continue to grow one of the best and most unique winter resort destinations in the world.”
The Wagner Process:
Wagner’s pride and joy and what truly sets them apart is their Skier DNA fitting process. Skier DNA begins with a detailed questionnaire that allows the Wagner team to understand your skiing behavior and goals inside and out. Once completed, their team of expert ski design engineers follow up with a phone call or Skype interview to dial in your one-of-a-kind ski specifications. Once they explore your needs in fine detail, specifications for your perfect-fit ski are created using advanced computerized diagnostic and design tools. An algorithm that Pete Wagner created prescribes ski dimensions, shape and flex pattern to match and advance your Skier DNA.
Your Skier DNA will also be used to establish a unique combination of materials - core, base and structural layup - to achieve the design goals in a lively, predictable and durable product. Wagner Custom uses only the best materials available from various wood cores to carbon fiber, the layering technique and build out is fully customizable.
Their Colorado factory uses state of the art computer-numerical-controlled (CNC) milling machines to precisely cut all parts of the ski so they fit together like a 3-D jigsaw puzzle. This takes away the need for, and the limitations of, traditional ski molds. After making the skis and incorporating your custom graphic, the skis are hand tuned and mounted with your choice of bindings so they’re ready to hit the slopes upon pickup.
The new Wagner shop offers on-site tours making it easy to check out this complex process for yourself. You can call to set up an appointment to tour the ski-making factory and discover the magic of Wagner. If you’re looking to try some of their skis in advance, Telluride Bootdoctors has the only fleet of Wagner skis available to demo.
