Mountain biking is one of our favorite fall activities. The cool air as we’re pedaling downhill, the colors of the leaves as the sun hits them just right….there really aren’t enough positive things we can say about the experience of mountain biking in Telluride this time of year. If you want to take advantage of this amazing weather and get some great views, here are our top three trail recommendations:
Galloping Goose Trail
This trail follows an old narrow-gauge rail line, which was built beginning in 1890 to help haul precious metals through the mountains. The grade is manageable and the terrain is not technical, making this a great beginner trail ride. The views, however, are spectacular. Access the northern trailhead from the Lawson Hill subdivision, about three miles west of Telluride.
Prospect is a local’s favorite. At ten miles in length, it is the longest single-track trail on the ski area. Enjoy a good mix of climbing and fast descents on single track with views for days. You can access Prospect Trail at the top of the Gondola at San Sophia Station.
Alta T35 is some of the most fun riding in San Miguel County. The narrow single track flows through pine trees and aspen groves, creating a yellow brick road of sorts in the fall. Enjoy a fast, fun descent into Ilium. To access the trailhead, head south on highway 145 and look for a small wooden sign on the south side of the road a few miles north of Ophir. The trail breaks down and right.
If you are new to mountain biking, you can take a guided tour, which will help you get accustomed to the sport, and you can also access the Mountain Village Bike Park right from the Gondola. And if you head out this fall, please share your photos with us on Instagram and Facebook !
