This winter, the Telluride Ski School is continuing their renowned specialty skiing camp programs to encourage skiers and snowboarders to be forever learners. Working to advance skills in both skiing and snowboarding, these camps address specific aspects and fundamentals of quality skiing and riding.
A highlight camp this winter is the Making Friends With Moguls camp where skiers can explore the fundamentals of efficient mogul skiing, making bumps the easier on your whole body. This two-day camp aims to advance the mature intermediate skier who is already proficient on all the groomed runs a ski resort may have to offer but hesitantly avoids mogul runs. The goal is to make friends with moguls and develop confidence in blue-level moguls. The camps begins with proven exercises and progressions to get you to your goals. The best part? You’ll be skiing in a small group setting with like-minded skiers who share your goals of mastering the moguls.
Benefits of the Making Friends With Mogul Camp:
- To explore the fundamentals of efficient skiing in moguls
- Create tactics for low impact skiing
- See more of the mountain than ever before
- Learn to overcome the fear of skiing moguls
- Develop a mogul strategy that can be used on any bump run
- Learn how the right equipment choices make skiing bumps easier
This camp has three sessions throughout the ski season:
- Session 1: January 17th - 18th
- Session 2: February 27th - 28th
- Session 3: March 4th - 5th
Although one has come and gone, you still have time to sign up for the February or March sessions. This popular camp will be back again next year to help many more skiers master the moguls.
Another great camp to take advantage of this ski season is the Heli-Ski Camp . The San Juan Mountains surrounding Telluride offer some of the most beautiful and inspiring ski terrain on the planet. If you dream of skiing amazing and untracked terrain like this but aren’t sure your skills are up to it, this camp was made for you.
On each of the three days, you’ll ski with one of Telluride’s many experienced instructors. The first two days of the camp will be with your instructor on selected slopes within the Telluride Ski Area to develop skills and experience in conditions and terrain similar to what you’ll ski from the helicopter. On the third day, you’ll jump on the helicopter with your coach and a guide from Helitrax and head out into the San Juan backcountry.
Helitrax, Colorado’s most experienced heli-ski company, flies right out of The Peaks Resort and Spa’s ski-in/ski-out ski valet. The pristine terrain Helitrax can access includes expansive alpine bowls, gladed slopes, and classic mountain couloirs. This wide variety of terrain allows your guide and instructor to choose the perfect run to suit your abilities, from high intermediate to expert, on any particular day. Check out the following YouTube clip for a glimpse of the terrain available to you with Helitrax:

Dr. Kim Hewson, Orthopedic Surgeon, former Director of Sports Medicine at University of Arizona, and a lead Telluride Ski School Instructor, has refined a scientific-based biomechanics approach to ski instruction that has been used internally at the Telluride Ski School for the past 10 years to improve the quality of ski school instruction. This innovative biomechanics approach is now available to the public through the Ski Biomechanics Camp.
Nature has designed our body to move efficiently, learn how to apply that concept to your skiing. The 3-day camp uses Dr. Hewson’s innovative approach, including video analysis, in-classroom learning, and on-snow application, to focus on efficient skiing using our natural functional alignment.
The Telluride Ski School was the first ski school to create a biomechanics camp available to anyone wanting to improve their skiing ability. Open to intermediate to expert skiers, participants ski in small, ability-matched groups with a maximum of four students per instructor. Classes are structured in order to maximize safety for all participants. Couples are welcome to ski together and, while teaching techniques are focused toward the less experienced skier, there’s always something new to learrn.
Earlier in the season, skiers had an opportunity to take their skiing to the next level by improving body awareness in Dr. Kim Hewson’s Ski Biomechanics Camp. And while this year’s camp came and went, be sure to look out for the dates for next year’s Ski Biomechanics Camp when planning your visit to Telluride.
