It’s that time of year again, where we say goodbye to another great winter and look forward to summer. If you know closing day at ski resorts, you know it is one big party all day. Here at Telluride we start the closing festivities a week early to keep you entertained from the moment you put on your ski gear the weekend before, until after the sun sets on the last day of skiing.
To get you in the mood for closing week, on Friday, March 24, Club Red presents “Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe.” Karl Denson is back in action with an extensive tour this winter. The run of shows being dubbed “Running With The Diesel” will give fans from the Southeast, Midwest and West Coast the chance to experience what is highly regarded as one of the best live bands on the planet. Karl, who now serves as the saxophonist in The Rolling Stones, is fresh off a tour with the legendary rock band that included the highest grossing concert festival or all time, Desert Trip. With KDTU, he’ll be showcasing material from his forthcoming studio album, due in early 2017, as well as previous acclaimed KDTU recordings like 'New Ammo' and ’The Bridge.' The current KDTU touring lineup is comprised of Richmond guitarist DJ Williams, Soulive drummer Alan Evans, Greyboy Allstars bassist Chris Stillwell, Crush Effects keyboardist David Veith, Seattle trumpeter Chris Littlefield and ace slide and lap steel guitarist Seth Freeman. For more information and to purchase tickets visit the Club Red Website.
To keep the party rolling, Rodney Strong Estate Vineyards will be hosting a free wine tasting at Gorrono Ranch on Saturday, March 25. These ski-in only events are a fun way to have après and unwind after a day in the sun skiing. The tasting will be from 11-4pm when the mountain closes for the day. Also on March 25 is the first Tellurando mountaineering race to benefit the Peter Inglis Fund. As you’re enjoying the spring skiing, keep an eye out for some amazing athletes as they ascend and descend Telluride’s famous terrain.
Then the next weekend, if you can believe it, will be closing weekend for Telluride Ski Resort. After you get your morning turns in on Sunday, April 2nd, DJ Soul Atomic will kick off the Closing Day festivities at 12 pm at Gorrono Ranch with the annual pond skim and dance party. Registration for the pond skim runs from 10-11 am at Gorrono, and you want to be sure to get there right away because only the first 100 people will be allowed to compete. The pond skim is an annual event, competitors ski down a steep slope to a manmade pond and try to skim across the water on their skis or snowboard. Cheers from the crowd fills the air as they’re splashed by the oncoming skier, who either falls into the water or skims across the pond gracefully. Extra points go to skimmers with crazy and wacky costumes.
Down in Mountain Village there will be plenty of live music to close out the season beginning with Cousin Curtiss, who has performed around Telluride all season long, playing in Heritage Plaza starting at 1:30 p.m. And once the party at Gorrono winds down, the crowds will meander down Misty Maiden to see G Love and Special Sauce perform starting at 3:15pm. It will be a free show with a cash bar featuring Telluride Brewing, Sweetwater Brewing, and Tito's American Mules.
G. Love has come a long way in the last 23 years since being discovered in a Boston pub by drummer Jeffrey “The Houseman” Clemens. After playing together, they brought in upright bassist James “Jimi Jazz” Prescott, and G. Love and Special Sauce was born. Their self-titled debut featuring the hit “Cold Beverage” wound up going gold, and the band became known for their live shows. After playing with and without Special Sauce over the years, the trio is back together, creating their down and dirty “trashcan blues” sound with their latest album Love Saves the Day, released last October. Live shows featuring raw grooves and funky rock ‘n’ roll are still a rush for the group, with G. Love proudly describing himself as a road dog who “will be touring until I fall off the stage.” Be sure to check out their website for more information and to hear some of their music.
